Isle au Haut School News

Winter 2004 - 2005  School News and Icy Pictures

Greetings,

School started off with a bang, and has not slowed down since. We are studying Maine, and began the year with a great trip to Aroostook county, where we visited a potato farm, the farm run by students of Presque Isle High School, a lumber mill, and a Hum Vee recycling plant at the former Limestone AFB. Fall is a wonderful time to make this long trip. We participated in the Schoodic Educational Adventure, in Winter Harbor, at the former Naval Base. It's good to see former military bases being used for educational purposes. We held our second annual community Thanksgiving feast at school, and served about 40 people. No one went away hungry! At Christmas time the students presented the Baddest Angel Band and gave a musical concert at the potluck. As usual a grand time was had by all! With Kathie, the children are planning a school garden, to be planted in the spring. Hopefully, they will be selling produce come summer.

Next Thursday, February 3, the children will be putting on a concert and potluck with all donations going to UNICEF, for the Tsunami Relief Effort. (See picture below) We are looking forward to our Spelling Bee, February vacation, and beginning our photography work with Walker Bob.

Our students at a benefit pot luck and concert for the tsunami relief effort. They raised over $500.00!. The Ice has left there has been a small seal hanging around the harbor sun bathing on

Late Late Spring 2004

On May 18, 2004, the Isle au Haut School was presented a Making the Grade Award for its "Island Ecology Project" which has been an ongoing project lead by Kathie Fiveash. One May 20-21, we hosted the Inter-Island Event, which was a huge success. The sun was shining brightly, and fun was had by all! Our last day of school is June 11, with the traditional picnic at Head Harbor, following Waylan's graduation from 8th grade!

Where has this year gone?

Have a happy and safe summer!

Late Spring 2004

Spring may be here, I have seen signs; bits of yellow, daffodils; deer in the middle of the road; sunshine; sparkling water; fog!

Things are busy at Isle au Haut Rural School. We are just finishing up a science unit on electricity and thanks to Rudy Graff and The Science Source, the children are having fun setting off buzzers, lighting up light bulbs and building series and parallel circuits.

As the students continue with the daily work of reading, writing and math, it is gratifying to note the progress they have made this year.

Watching them play wiffle ball on the front lawn is great fun! A home run is scored if they hit the teacher's car. It is an automatic out, if they hit the teacher! It doesn't seem possible that this school year is almost finished!

Erica, our volunteer, arranged for the children to use their orientating skills to go on an Easter egg scavenger hunt. Eggs were found by all!

When they returned to school, Lisa and Anne-Claude had hid 85 more eggs.

The presentation of The Making The Grade award has been rescheduled for May 19, 2004. The Inter-Island Event is that following Thursday and Friday.

Early spring 2004

Nicholas Barter won the Island Spelling Bee, Vicki MacDonald was the runner-up who represented us in Rockland, at the Knox County Bee.

We will be going on a field trip, to Portland on March 31-April 3,with the students from Monhegan. While there we will visit DeLorme Maps, The Children's Museum, and The Portland Art Museum,

On April 13, 2004, the school will be presented with the Making the Grade Award, for its Island Ecology Project. A member of the State Board of Education will be presenting this award.

Isle au Haut will be hosting the Inter-Island Event which has been scheduled for May 20-21. A rain date to be determined.

Five new computers have arrived, as well as digital camera and video equipment, updating our technology.

On March 3, 2004, we saw our first Bluebird! Spring is coming!

As always, the students are strong, handsome and above average!
